Tennis game terms

Last week I was watching Roland Garros. That is a famous tennis tournament. When I was watching the game between Sharapova and Halep, I was a little bit frustrated. Not because of the game itself, but because I didn’t understand the terms the commentator was saying. So I looked up some terms and their explanation.

·         Rally: a lengthy back and forth series of shots between players or sides. This is what the crowd likes the most.

·         Serve: putting the ball into play

·         Receiver: the player receive the serve during the game.

·         Smash: aggressive shot that lands down hard into the opponent's side.

·         Tiebreaker: system to decide winner for a set that is tied.

·         Set Point: final game or match point, that if successful becomes that player's win.

·         Set: series of at least 6 games to include a two-game margin win, unless there is a tiebreaker.

·         Service Line Judge: game official who monitors and calls served hits.

·         Ace: a serve that is a winner without the receiving tennis player able to return the ball.

·         Drop shot: a strategy where the tennis player hits the ball just go over the net. It is used when the opponent is far from the net.

·         Backspin: spin of a tennis ball that causes the ball to slow down and/or bounce low.

·         Deuce: when the score in a game is 40 to 40.

·         Baseliner: a tennis player whose strategy is to play from the baseline.

·         Jamming: to hit the tennis ball straight to the opponent's body not allowing them to extend the racquet to hit the ball well.

·         Game point: one point away to win the tennis game.

·         Love: zero points in a tennis game.

·         Straight sets: when one player wins every set in a match.
